Teaching

Teaching is a vocation that is developed and refined over time, enriched by the presentation and interaction of different viewpoints and ideas between students and teachers in the broadest of terms. One of the principal reasons I came to work in the field of linguistics was to be able to train and work with students at all levels and to contribute to a more inclusive society through collaborative and multidisciplinary learning.

There are a number of interrelated principles that inform my approach and beliefs about teaching. Engaging students in meaningful course materials, readings, and lectures, and providing an environment where students feel safe to take risks to discuss controversial or challenging topics is paramount. Setting clear output expectations and working with students to achieve these learning goals is a central and an ongoing part of the learning process. In imparting knowledge, it is my responsibility to foster a learning environment where students think about how this knowledge is relevant to them, and how to integrate it with their own life experiences. This cultivates and builds student intent, so that they take a personal interest and responsibility for their education.

“Were a language ever completely "grammatical" it would be a perfect engine of conceptual expression. Unfortunately, or luckily, no language is tyrannically consistent. All grammars leak.”

Edward Sapir - Language (1921)
